Gemma usually sleeps in until after I’ve left for work, but Tuesday and Wednesday she woke up before I had gotten out the door. Tuesday’s crack-of-dawn question was “So, what’s a government shutdown?” Wednesday she wanted to know what elements are in fire (because, she said, some people call fire an element when it’s not). The answer is there are four elements in a flame: oxygen, hydrogen, carbon, and nitrogen.

Year 2: Term 3 - Pajama Saturday

We re-listened to Haydn’s Piano Concerto in D Major, re-viewed Cassat’s painting of A Mother Sewing, played Forbidden Sky (and lost), read about Marco Polo, located Java in the atlas, finished Victoria Rebels (next up: Cleopatra), read a little Robin Hood, did some Life of Fred: Decimals, played Prodigy together (Team Titan Battles), and Gemma practiced piano (the blues and a minuet).

Year 2: Term 3 - A School Evening

Our “school evening” yesterday included a story about Edward I joining England and Wales, a look at a map of the United Kingdom, a conversation about why London had a black star while Belfast, Edinburgh, and Cardiff had white stars, a YouTube video of a beginning Welsh lesson, a passage about Chinese houseboats, a YouTube video of Chinese houseboats, writing “Jerusalem is in Israel” on the J page in Cursive Around the World, and spelling and Spanish apps. 

(Earlier in the day, Gemma read a passage in Luke, a page in Tales of Troy & Greece, and a handful of Rossetti poems, practiced piano, and for fun, worked on her Which Way USA: North Carolina.)

Field Trip: Getty Center

On Wednesday, Gemma and I went to the Getty Center to look at the Rembrandts.

Gemma noticed that a turban in one painting matched the turban in a painting in her book (published by the Met).

She also noticed that a model in one of the museum’s paintings looked like the model in one of the Met’s Rembrandts - “The Noble Slav.”
