Our 4th Of July Parade Float In Progress #1

Today is Float-Making Day at our house. Right now, my stepdad, my husband, and our neighbor are drilling and sawing. My mom is cutting cardboard. I'm downloading our playlist (Schoolhouse Rock songs: 1)Fireworks, 2)Great American Melting Pot, and 3)No More Kings). My stepdaughter is keeping my four year old busy with a giant U.S.A. photo puzzle map.

People who are walking by keep asking if its a Star of David. It's not. The base is an 11-point star. Here's why: In 1806, the U.S. government started building a star fort on Liberty Island. It was a strategic defense point during the War of 1812. The star fort is a fortification style that has been around since the 15th century. Each point of the 11-point star is a bastion; each point can defend the fort's wall as well as the neighboring bastions.

Okay, so I'm downloading our playlist and learning about the rise of bastion fortifications. And doing laundry. Towels don't wash themselves.
